What is Mackeeper?
Mackeeper is a suite of cleaning and optimization tools for Mac.
Will it slow my Mac?
No. It actually improved my Macbook's performance. I ended up saving some storage space. The three features that I liked the most were Memory Ccleaner, Duplicates Finder, and Smart Uninstaller. Using these three I was able to free up RAM and clean up my hard drive to save space.
Is Mackeeper a scam?
Let's define 'scam' first. Here's the Oxford Definition:

Now, Mackeeper is not a fraud. It does exactly what it says on the tin. It's cleaning utility and it does clean junk from your Mac.
I didn't notice any performance issues after installing Mackeeper on my Macbook Air 2013 (Note to self: Time to upgrade the machine).

Download and Installation:
After getting the license key, I downloaded Mackeeper from their download page.
Installation is pretty simple. Open the pkg file and follow the on-screen instructions.

Memory Cleaner:
My Macbook Air has 4 GB of RAM, and I do give it a run for its money with all the apps I have open simultaneously. I managed to free up almost 25% RAM using the Memory Cleaner tool as can be seen in the screenshots below.
Duplicates Finder:
One of the most useful features of Mackeeper is the Duplicates Finder. If you download a lot of stuff from the internet and move it around a lot, chances are you might have a few duplicate files sitting on your hard drive. It doesn't make much difference if the files are of small size (like in my case) but de-duping can free up some storage if the duplicate files are bigger in size e.g. video files, ISOs, etc.
Smart Uninstaller:
Another useful feature. Awecleaner 4 3 – all in one system cleaner. In case you're not already aware, just deleting the app file does not uninstall that app from your Mac. You can use this tool to add/remove programs to your startup. Pretty simple.

If you have a lot of files on your Mac, there may be some large files that are no longer needed. This module scans your hard drive and tells you which file/folder is taking how much space so you can decide whether or not you want to keep it there. I suck at file management and keeping things clean so this is a pretty useful feature for me.

Again, a pretty simple tool to change the default apps for various file types.

Shredder:

If you've got some files that you permanently want to delete without leaving the possibility to recover them using some data recovery software, you can use the Mackeeper Shredder to 'shred' them. Just select a file, and it will delete/shred it permanently. Comes in handy sometimes.
