While sexual imagery was nothing new in entertainment or marketing, the educational element created an open dialogue about sexual behavior in this country that was really kind of unprecedented. For the first time, people were encouraged to be honest about their private lives and told that it didn't matter what they were doing or who they were doing it with as long as they were being smart and safe. In some ways it was something of a conscious sexual revolution. Of course, this world will always be culturally divided and…really gossipy. The rise of tabloid culture certainly didn't help the conversation. And women tend to be met with a special brand of criticism for engaging in sexually liberated behavior. Salt-n-Pepa had for years been a group that challenged what a women could or should say in their music. And this song was a fantastic answer to anyone who felt they had the right to pass judgment on what anyone does on their own time.

Now, this isn't exactly one of those 'look for the hidden meaning' songs. The opening shots consist of fake tabloid headlines about the group's private life and the lyrics are beyond straight forward. They honestly could have had a video where they lyrics just scrolled across the screen and their point would have still come through loud and clear. But Salt-n-Pepa, along with director Matthew Rolston (whose signature lighting design is all over this video,) inserted a few extra images that I think really enhance and broaden the message of the song. 'None Of Your Business' is performed by women. And songs lyrical content applies to women as well (particularly those who chose to have multiple sexual partners.) But the overall message can be applied to just about anyone. So it's really great to see same sex couples and interracial couples represented in this clip.

But in the scenes where the male strippers are partying with the crown, the women are wearing a lot more clothing than the men. It's hard to think of many other videos (hip-hop or otherwise) where that's ever the case.

I also want to quickly touch on the mention of God in this song. I'm sure there are plenty of people who believe that a video featuring male strippers, promoting a message of sexual liberation has no business also claiming a religious connection. But the words simply make the point that people have no business judging each other and if you happen to be religious then they serve a reminder that judging is actually someone else' job. It's refreshing to see performers who are just as out and proud about their sexual identities as well as their faith.

It's interesting that almost 20 years after this song was released we're still having debates over what women, or anyone for that matter, choose to do in their private lives. And unfortunately, I haven't heard a song or seen a video in recent years that calls out the haters in a way that's nearly direct or as much fun as this one. Hopefully with the recent 90s nostalgia boom someone will remember that it's videos like this one that helped make that decade so much fun.
